The cultural and traditional use of Guarana may differ from those put into practice by modern medicine. While using a herbal product, consultation with a competent doctor or health care specialist is essential, in order to avoid future health problems. Because of Guarana’s high caffeine content, it is used as an appetite suppressant and stimulant. Since Guarana has not been evaluated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), its potential risks and advantages are still mostly unknown. In addition, the compounds which constitute the Guarana extract and are also used in the pills and other dietary supplements made from this plant, have no specified manufacturing standards.

Guarana pills should not be taken along with ephedrine in restricted diets or energy-boosting supplements, as it may cause potentially fatal irregularity in heartbeat. Because of its side effects, Guarana pills or the extract in any other form is not advisable for heart patients, for those who have high blood pressure, kidney or thyroid patients and those suffering from an anxiety or nervous disorder. It should also be avoided by pregnant and lactating women. The doctor must also be consulted in order to find out the components of Guarana, and their interaction with other chemicals, as well as to avoid allergic reactions.

Guarana pills are often used as an effective solution to obesity and lack of energy. It is also used as a detoxicant, to purify the bloodstream, and to treat intestinal gas, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, dysentery, neuralgia, arteriosclerosis, migraine relief, rheumatism and cellulite reduction.

In order to understand the effects of Guarana, it is important know the function of caffeine; especially since Guarana contains 2.5 times more caffeine than coffee. Firstly, caffeine binds adenosine receptors to the brain, which acts as a stimulant, and keeps the nervous system in a state of prolonged excitement. Secondly, it also increases the level of dopamine in the brain, which leads to a heightened feeling of well-being. This increases the energy levels of the individual. The second important effect of Guarana pills is that they aid weight loss. This is by increasing metabolism, producing more energy for physical activities, and suppressing appetite (it is known to be an adaptogen).

Since we have already discussed the effects of the Guarana pill, and the plant extract in general, we must also talk about some of the common side effects produced by Guarana. These include insomnia, nervousness, indigestion, nausea, headaches, increased urination and tinnitus (ringing in ears). The Guarana pills however, may have some other side effects, which can prove to be potentially harmful, and must be reported to a competent physician immediately, if detected. Such serious side effects of Guarana include rapid breathing and heart rate, increased pulse rate, palpitation, seizures, anxiety attacks, and allergic conditions like rash, wheezing, swelling and difficulty in breathing and swallowing.

Even though herbal medicines seem more promising and exotic, in the end, they act in much the same way as drugs, and therefore should be used with proper consultation.
